Teams,
After much consideration and discussions with the board members and tournament directors, we have decided to cancel this year’s Ice of March tournament. We are following the lead of USA Hockey in the cancellation of sanctioned tournaments and other sports organizations regarding the convening of large public events.
As mentioned earlier, our greatest concern is for the safety of the players and attendees of our event. While we are confident the Mentor Ice Arena is taking steps to ensure the cleanliness of our facility through various sanitizing procedures, we could not guarantee the same for the other facilities in which we were hosting games. We have also heard concerns regarding the number and close proximity of those staying in hotels.
Although this will have a major impact on our fundraising and the ability to secure ice for our program, we have decided that cancelling the tournament was in the best interest of all those involved.
Please note, all teams will be refunded their registration fee. We will have more details regarding this process in the coming days.
We apologize for any inconvenience or confusion over the past week. It seems with each passing hour, the news regarding the coronavirus becomes more and more serious. While we were confident a few days ago, concerns are only increasing and we intend to do our part in helping to stop the spread of this disease.
Thank you once again for supporting our tournament and your patience as we worked our way to this difficult decision. We hope you will keep us in mind for next year!
Yours in hockey,
Ron Wilkinson
